Sligo. A river through town. A mountain in the imagination.
Make Sligo town our base for riverside meals, art and music, with Benbulben on the horizon. We could follow the Yeats story, wander among ancient stones, or take a coastal afternoon at Strandhill or Rosses Point.
A river through town. A mountain in the imagination.
Sligo brings the outdoors close to a lively town. The Model’s art, the Garavogue and the old abbey offer a satisfying day without a long journey. Further out, Carrowmore, Drumcliffe and the coast open different windows onto the county. We could end with a traditional session, a meal with friends or a separately arranged space for social tango. Knocknarea is a strenuous option for those who want it; there is just as much room for art, sea air and a slower pace. Everyone is welcome, whether or not they dance.

Sligo · Poetry, painting and the shape of the land
Follow a river through town, then look up at the mountain that keeps appearing in the story.
Sligo’s Yeats connections lead in two directions: into the countryside associated with W. B. Yeats’s poems, and into the paintings of his brother Jack B. Yeats. At Drumcliffe, the poet’s grave sits beneath the presence of Benbulben. Back in town, the Garavogue gives us another way into the place: bridges, passing conversations and the ordinary life around a river.
The Niland Collection began with a gift from Jack B. Yeats and grew through the determination of county librarian Nora Niland, public support and other donors. Now housed at The Model, it connects that local story with a wider world of Irish art. Carrowmore takes us into a much older landscape, where prehistoric tombs ask for a slower kind of attention.
Choose one painting, one line of poetry or one shape on the horizon. Give it a little time before the next stop.
These are Sligo’s own cultural connections. A local storyteller, guided gallery visit, musician or private tango evening would need a separate arrangement; no named contributor or class is booked.
A closer look
More of Sligo to fall for.
A few different sides of the county, from its best-known landscapes to the places we could take our time exploring.
I’ve gathered a few possibilities. Choose the ones you’d enjoy, or leave some time free. Each price is a guide; what we spend depends on what we choose and the arrangements we agree.
Pick the ideas you like, or keep a day open. Nothing here commits you to a booking.
A proposed locally hosted introduction to the riverside, town streets and Sligo’s literary connections. The per-person guide allowance is for a town walk; indoor admissions and café purchases are separate. Match the start to actual arrivals.

Strandhill sea air & a café pause

A good day, whatever the weather.
The Model offers an indoor art alternative with free gallery entry; check exhibitions and group arrangements. Its published gallery hours are Tuesday–Saturday 11:00–17:00 and Sunday from noon, so it does not replace an early Sunday outing. If weather rules out Knocknarea or a coast walk, choose town, a gallery visit at opening time or a relaxed meal instead.

How we might spend the weekend.
I’d like us to have time together over dinner and music, with room to do our own thing too. These suggested times help us think it through; we can settle the details once we know what everyone would enjoy.

A meal at Hargadon Bros
Make time for food and conversation in a pub established in 1868. It is a useful independent dining lead for a few friends alongside the proposed shared dinners.
Before you go
The pub currently lists food Tuesday–Saturday. Confirm table size, menu, dietary needs and dated hours; no Sunday meal or regular music session is assumed.

Ask about the Swan Suite
The Glasshouse’s separate event space is a lead for an evening we could shape together. A private room could give music and social dancing their own space, if the venue agrees.
Before you go
Published capacity is not a dinner-and-dance guarantee. Ask about a suitable clear floor, furniture, sound, private hire and access for the actual group. No class or booking is included.

Current sessions are 50 minutes, with a single bath listed at €45. Group enquiries and staggered times are needed; no whole-group capacity, transfer or booking is included in the planner.

Return economy flight per adult from London. Broad budgeting allowances, not live fares or a dated quotation. Small under-seat bag only; larger cabin bags, checked bags, seats and UK airport travel are extra. Peak weekends can exceed these ranges.
For Heathrow, use a separate broad allowance of £150–£300 return.

Allow time to wait for the bus. Fares cover airport-to-town travel; hotel connections and taxis cost extra.
The notebook starts with a planning group of 10; choosing 5 or 15 does not change the per-person bus allowance. A private vehicle needs its own quote.
Ireland West currently charges a separate €10 departure development fee for passengers aged 12+, outside the notebook total. Check the route 64 timetable against your flight; a different arrival airport needs its own travel plan.

Independent walks can cost nothing; meals, drinks and paid visits remain extra unless stated.

Two shared-room nights with breakfast, two dinners, return public airport travel and one Saturday outing. The range combines the lower and upper airport-bus allowance with the different Saturday choices; it is not a supplier price range. No Friday or Sunday paid outing is included in this example.
Add your flight budget separately in pounds. Airport-specific fees, baggage, lunches, drinks, insurance and personal spending are extra. Optional tango arrangements are excluded and would need a separate agreed quote.
Arrive in Sligo town. Choose a riverside and Yeats introduction, time with the town’s art and history, or a seaside alternative if arrivals allow. Meet for dinner and music.
Saturday
Choose one main outing: Yeats country and Benbulben views, Carrowmore with the coast, or the strenuous Knocknarea walk. Return to town for dinner, music and optional tango if arranged.
Sunday
Choose a relaxed town morning, Rosses Point or a Strandhill outing when timings suit. Allow for the return airport transfer; keep a longer Yeats-country visit for an extra day.
These are alternatives to choose from, not a checklist. Flight times, access, weather and availability will shape the final itinerary.
