Our six possibilities

The diaspora chapter · Westport

Mayo.
Where the mountain meets the sea.

A few days based in Westport, with Clew Bay’s islands on the horizon and music waiting in town. There’s room here for a mountain day, a gentle coastal wander or a good long conversation over dinner.

Downpatrick Head, County Mayo

Why we might come here

Where the mountain meets the sea.

We could follow Gráinne Mhaol’s story around Clew Bay, pedal a section of the Greenway, or discover Foxford’s connection with Argentina through Admiral William Brown. A full North Mayo day could take us to Downpatrick Head and the nearly 6,000-year-old Céide Fields. Then there’s Westport to come home to: colourful streets, dinner together and an Irish session. Mayo’s 2026 All-Ireland football win gives us another story to share with local people. There’s plenty for dancers and friends who simply want to come along. Croagh Patrick is optional and needs preparation; gentler bay and town days are equally welcome.

Clew Bay · History & folklore

Gráinne’s shore

An island on the horizon. A sea captain’s story. A good place to begin.

Look towards Clare Island and imagine Clew Bay as Gráinne Mhaol knew it: a way out into the world. The sixteenth-century sea captain made these shores her territory, with strongholds on Clare Island and at Rockfleet.

Folklore tells of her shutting her husband out of Rockfleet after a year of marriage. The historical account is less tidy; they remained married. Both threads belong to the telling: the woman who commanded ships, and the stories that kept her name alive.

On a Clew Bay outing, look towards Clare Island and let the landscape give Gráinne’s story its scale. Then bring what caught your imagination back to the table in Westport.

This is a story of the wider bay. A Rockfleet or Clare Island visit is not included automatically. For another chapter of Mayo’s history, choose the separate North Mayo day to Downpatrick Head and Céide Fields.

A closer look

Mayo, in all its wildness.

Atlantic cliffs, turquoise bays and valleys that make you stop and look. There is room here for a grand adventure, or simply a very beautiful pause.

A few things we could do.

I’ve gathered a few possibilities. Choose the ones you’d enjoy, or leave some time free. Each price is a guide; what we spend depends on what we choose and the arrangements we agree.

A little local colour · Gaelic football

A story shared across Mayo.

On 26 July 2026, Mayo beat Kerry 1–20 to 1–17 to become All-Ireland senior football champions for the first time since 1951. After a 75-year wait, the celebrations brought generations of supporters together.

It’s another story to hear over dinner after a day on the coast. A match or screening could be a lovely extra if our dates fit; fixtures and tickets would need checking, and none are included.

The background & the winning moment

Between those victories came 13 winless final matches: 11 defeats and two draws, with replays in 1996 and 2016. The supporters kept coming back.

The famous “curse” links the drought to a funeral allegedly disrespected by the returning 1951 team. It is folklore, with its origins disputed. The enduring story is of players and supporters whose hope lasted across generations, and the joy of 2026.

A route to consider

Ireland West · NOC

Compare Ireland West Airport Knock for Westport. London Heathrow, Luton and Stansted are listed by the airport; check the actual dates with the airline.

Bus Éireann 440 links Ireland West Airport with Westport’s Mill Street. Allow up to 100 minutes on the bus plus waiting and hotel travel. The guide includes €20–25 per adult return; check the timetable against your flights. A taxi or private transfer needs a separate quote.

A fair comparison · Westport

What might the weekend cost?

A per-person guide for two nights, with two adults sharing a twin/double room including breakfast. Add two dinners, your chosen activities and return airport travel by public transport. The same assumptions apply to all six destinations; dates and bookings remain to agree.

Return flights from London · GBP
£100–£250

London Stansted or Luton to Ireland West (Knock); Heathrow is another route to compare.

Return economy flight per adult from London. Broad budgeting allowances, not live fares or a dated quotation. Small under-seat bag only; larger cabin bags, checked bags, seats and UK airport travel are extra. Peak weekends can exceed these ranges.

For Heathrow, use a separate broad allowance of £150–£300 return.

Check routes and dated fares
Stay with breakfast · EUR per night
€90–€150 sharing

Per person with two sharing a room; €140–€220 for sole occupancy. These are planning ranges, not offers from the suggested hotels.

The notebook uses €118 sharing or €176 single per night until we have quotes.

Return airport bus · EUR
€20–€25 per person

Bus Éireann 440: Ireland West Airport ↔ Westport, Mill Street. €20–25 per adult return on scheduled route 440. A future-trip planning allowance, not a quote; check flight-compatible departures. Hotel-to-stop travel is extra.

Allow time to wait for the bus. Fares cover airport-to-town travel; hotel connections and taxis cost extra.

The notebook starts with a planning group of 10; choosing 5 or 15 does not change the per-person bus allowance. A private vehicle needs its own quote.

Ireland West currently charges a separate €10 departure development fee for passengers aged 12+. Allow for this outside the notebook total.

Choose your activities · EUR
€8–€65 per chosen outing

Working per-person allowances for the outing described on each card. Check the included guide, admission and local transport. Pick one main idea per day; alternatives are not added to your estimate.

Independent walks can cost nothing; meals, drinks and paid visits remain extra unless stated.

An example, using the notebook allowances

€362–€401 per person on the ground

Two shared-room nights with breakfast, two dinners, return public airport travel and one Saturday outing. The range combines the lower and upper airport-bus allowance with the different Saturday choices; it is not a supplier price range. No Friday or Sunday paid outing is included in this example.

Add your flight budget separately in pounds. Airport-specific fees, baggage, lunches, drinks, insurance and personal spending are extra. Optional tango arrangements are excluded and would need a separate agreed quote.

Build your own guide price

A guideline, with room to choose

A possible weekend in Westport.

  1. Friday

Arrive and settle into Westport. If timing allows, choose a town walk or Clew Bay outing; meet over dinner and find some local music.

  2. Saturday

Choose one main day: Croagh Patrick, a gentler Clew Bay outing, Foxford’s Irish–Argentine story, or a full North Mayo day at Downpatrick Head and Céide Fields. Return for dinner, music and optional tango if arranged.

  3. Sunday

Choose a shorter Greenway, heritage or town outing, or simply take a leisurely breakfast. Leave in time for the airport; stay until Monday if the flights suit.

These are alternatives to choose from, not a checklist. Flight times, access, weather and availability will shape the final itinerary.

Planning notes updated 13 October 2026. Flight, accommodation and future bus allowances are editorial budgeting assumptions, not live price checks. Today’s published bus examples are listed separately on the fare sources page.
