The mountain road and lake through the Gap of Dunloe.
Our six possibilities

The landscape chapter · Killarney

Kerry.
Where the lakes keep their secrets.

Perhaps you’d love the lakes and mountain roads of Kerry. We could make Killarney our base and see what draws us out each day, with time to come back, eat together and hear some music.

Gap of Dunloe, County Kerry

Why we might come here

Where the lakes keep their secrets.

There’s more here than I’d try to squeeze into one weekend. Would you rather hear the lake legend at Ross Castle, head towards the Gap of Dunloe or take the quieter paths around Muckross? Have a look at the possibilities and tell me. We can choose a few things we’d really enjoy and leave room for whatever the weather and the day bring. Football is another way into the Kingdom: Kerry holds the record of 39 men’s senior All-Ireland titles, most recently in 2025. From Mick O’Dwyer’s great teams to David Clifford, it is a sporting heritage woven into local conversation. A match or screening would depend on confirmed fixtures and tickets.

Ross Castle · A lake legend

The rider beneath the lake

Still water. A white horse. A story that refuses to leave.

At Ross Castle, let your eyes settle on Lough Leane. Local legend says O’Donoghue sleeps beneath its waters and returns on a white horse every seven years, on the first morning of May. Whoever sees him is promised a lifetime of good fortune.

The castle belongs to history; the rider belongs to folklore. Together they give this shore its particular pull. Take the path slowly, watch the light move across the lake, and carry the story back into Killarney when the evening begins.

On the Ross Castle outing, stop by the shore before turning back towards town. This is a place worth a few quiet minutes.

What takes your fancy?

A few things we could do.

I’ve gathered a few possibilities. Choose the ones you’d enjoy, or leave some time free. Each price is a guide; what we spend depends on what we choose and the arrangements we agree.

Pick the ideas you like, or keep a day open. Nothing here commits you to a booking.

Gaelic football · the Kingdom’s tradition

Thirty-nine titles, and stories everywhere

Kerry holds the record of 39 men’s senior All-Ireland football titles, most recently in 2025. Mick O’Dwyer’s celebrated teams won eight between 1975 and 1986; players such as David Clifford carry that tradition forward. Ask a local which Kerry team they remember best.

Before you go

A possible match visit or pub screening depends on the 2027 fixtures, ticket availability and the group’s wishes. It is an optional idea, with admission and travel separately priced once confirmed.

A route to consider

Kerry · KIR

Kerry Airport is a useful starting point for Killarney, with London Luton and Stansted listed. Cork is another possibility with a separate onward connection.

Bus Éireann 271 links Kerry Airport with Killarney bus station, with limited departures. Allow up to 35 minutes on the bus plus waiting and hotel travel. The guide includes €10–15 per adult return when this service fits your flights. Another bus or a taxi needs its own fare check.

Travel routes & guidance

A fair comparison · Killarney

What might the weekend cost?

A per-person guide for two nights, with two adults sharing a twin/double room including breakfast. Add two dinners, your chosen activities and return airport travel by public transport. The same assumptions apply to all six destinations; dates and bookings remain to agree.

Return flights from London · GBP
£100–£250

London Stansted or Luton to Kerry Airport. Compare Cork only with its longer onward transfer included.

Return economy flight per adult from London. Broad budgeting allowances, not live fares or a dated quotation. Small under-seat bag only; larger cabin bags, checked bags, seats and UK airport travel are extra. Peak weekends can exceed these ranges.

Check routes and dated fares
Stay with breakfast · EUR per night
€100–€160 sharing

Per person with two sharing a room; €150–€240 for sole occupancy. These are planning ranges, not offers from the suggested hotels.

The notebook uses €127 sharing or €188 single per night until we have quotes.

Return airport bus · EUR
€10–€15 per person

Bus Éireann 271: Kerry Airport ↔ Killarney bus station. €10–15 per adult return on route 271 when its limited timetable fits your flights. A planning allowance, not a quote. A taxi or another service needs a separate price; hotel-to-stop travel is extra.

Allow time to wait for the bus. Fares cover airport-to-town travel; hotel connections and taxis cost extra.

The notebook starts with a planning group of 10; choosing 5 or 15 does not change the per-person bus allowance. A private vehicle needs its own quote.

This transport allowance assumes Kerry Airport. A Cork or Dublin arrival needs a separate transfer plan and price.

Check the route and timetable

Published fare reference

Choose your activities · EUR
€8–€56 per chosen outing

Working per-person allowances for the outing described on each card. Check the included guide, admission and local transport. Pick one main idea per day; alternatives are not added to your estimate.

Independent walks can cost nothing; meals, drinks and paid visits remain extra unless stated.

An example, using the notebook allowances

€373–€400 per person on the ground

Two shared-room nights with breakfast, two dinners, return public airport travel and one Saturday outing. The range combines the lower and upper airport-bus allowance with the different Saturday choices; it is not a supplier price range. No Friday or Sunday paid outing is included in this example.

Add your flight budget separately in pounds. Airport-specific fees, baggage, lunches, drinks, insurance and personal spending are extra. Optional tango arrangements are excluded and would need a separate agreed quote.

Build your own guide price

A guideline, with room to choose

A possible weekend in Killarney.

  1. Friday

Arrive in Killarney and, if time allows, explore the town or Ross Castle area. Gather for dinner and an evening of local music.

  2. Saturday

Choose a Gap of Dunloe and lakes day, a scenic touring day or a gentler local outing. Keep the evening for a shared dinner, music and optional tango if arranged.

  3. Sunday

Choose Muckross or a shorter Torc Waterfall/Ladies View outing. Allow time for the return transfer; make a longer Kerry tour an extra-day choice.

These are alternatives to choose from, not a checklist. Flight times, access, weather and availability will shape the final itinerary.

Planning notes updated 13 October 2026. Flight, accommodation and future bus allowances are editorial budgeting assumptions, not live price checks. Today’s published bus examples are listed separately on the fare sources page.

One more day?

There is always another road.

Give the Dingle Peninsula or the full Ring of Kerry its own day. Slea Head, coastal villages and a long lunch deserve a full day of their own.
