Our six possibilities

The Atlantic chapter · Galway City

Galway.
Where the west finds its voice.

If music, lively streets and a little Atlantic adventure sound like your kind of weekend, I’d love us to spend some time around Galway. We can decide together how far beyond the city to wander.

Lough Kylemore, Connemara

Why we might come here

Where the west finds its voice.

We could stay close to Galway’s waterfront and music, take a day into Connemara or look at an island visit if the weather and sea allow. They’re quite different days, so I’d rather know which you’d enjoy than choose for you. There’s no need to do everything. A walk, a story and a good evening together would be a lovely way to spend our time. Galway is also home to famous Race Week at Ballybrit, a gathering of racing, music, fashion and lively city evenings with roots in 1869. The city comes alive for it: a glimpse of the sociable spirit that fills its streets, pubs and long evenings around the table.

Kylemore · A Connemara tale

A stone across the valley

In a landscape this large, even the stories think big.

On the Kylemore estate, a great stone sits at an unlikely angle. One local legend blames an argument between Cú Chulainn and Fionn: a boulder hurled across the Connemara valley, missing its target and settling where it stands today. Its shape gave it the name the Ironing Stone.

It is folklore, an extravagant explanation for an unexpected rock. Look up towards the mountains and let the scale of the place do the rest. Some stories ask only that you linger.

If you choose the Kylemore day, ask about the estate’s stories as well as its buildings. There is more here than the familiar photograph.

What takes your fancy?

A few things we could do.

I’ve gathered a few possibilities. Choose the ones you’d enjoy, or leave some time free. Each price is a guide; what we spend depends on what we choose and the arrangements we agree.

Pick the ideas you like, or keep a day open. Nothing here commits you to a booking.

How we might spend the weekend.

I’d like us to have time together over dinner and music, with room to do our own thing too. These suggested times help us think it through; we can settle the details once we know what everyone would enjoy.

Race Week · part of Galway’s character

Ballybrit, and a city in festival mood

Home to the famous Race Week at Ballybrit, Galway has been welcoming racegoers since 1869. The city comes alive with colour, conversation, fashion, music and nights that spill beyond the racecourse: another expression of its sociable spirit.

A route to consider

Shannon · SNN

Compare Shannon arrivals for Galway, then check Bus Éireann’s journey planner or a quoted private transfer. Flights and onward travel need matching for your dates.

Expressway 51 links Shannon Airport with Galway bus station. Allow up to 115 minutes on the bus plus waiting and hotel travel. The guide includes €30–40 per adult return; check actual fares and flight-compatible departures. A taxi or private transfer needs a separate quote.

A fair comparison · Galway City

What might the weekend cost?

A per-person guide for two nights, with two adults sharing a twin/double room including breakfast. Add two dinners, your chosen activities and return airport travel by public transport. The same assumptions apply to all six destinations; dates and bookings remain to agree.

Return flights from London · GBP
£100–£250

London Stansted or Gatwick to Shannon; compare Heathrow too. Allow for the onward journey to Galway city.

Return economy flight per adult from London. Broad budgeting allowances, not live fares or a dated quotation. Small under-seat bag only; larger cabin bags, checked bags, seats and UK airport travel are extra. Peak weekends can exceed these ranges.

For Heathrow, use a separate broad allowance of £150–£300 return.

Check routes and dated fares
Stay with breakfast · EUR per night
€105–€170 sharing

Per person with two sharing a room; €160–€250 for sole occupancy. These are planning ranges, not offers from the suggested hotels.

The notebook uses €131 sharing or €195 single per night until we have quotes.

Return airport bus · EUR
€30–€40 per person

Expressway 51: Shannon Airport ↔ Galway bus station. €30–40 per adult return on scheduled Expressway 51. A future-trip planning allowance, not a quote; allow roughly two hours plus waiting. Hotel-to-stop travel is extra.

Allow time to wait for the bus. Fares cover airport-to-town travel; hotel connections and taxis cost extra.

The notebook starts with a planning group of 10; choosing 5 or 15 does not change the per-person bus allowance. A private vehicle needs its own quote.

Shannon is the comparison gateway. Match the public coach timetable to your flight, including waiting time and the journey to your accommodation.

Published fare reference

Choose your activities · EUR
€8–€68 per chosen outing

Working per-person allowances for the outing described on each card. Check the included guide, admission and local transport. Pick one main idea per day; alternatives are not added to your estimate.

Independent walks can cost nothing; meals, drinks and paid visits remain extra unless stated.

An example, using the notebook allowances

€403–€440 per person on the ground

Two shared-room nights with breakfast, two dinners, return public airport travel and one Saturday outing. The range combines the lower and upper airport-bus allowance with the different Saturday choices; it is not a supplier price range. No Friday or Sunday paid outing is included in this example.

Add your flight budget separately in pounds. Airport-specific fees, baggage, lunches, drinks, insurance and personal spending are extra. Optional tango arrangements are excluded and would need a separate agreed quote.

Build your own guide price

A guideline, with room to choose

A possible weekend in Galway City.

  1. Friday

Settle into Galway, with a city walk, coastal stroll or small-group food outing if arrivals allow. Meet for dinner and music around town.

  2. Saturday

Choose Connemara and Kylemore, a full Inis Mór day, or Fahy’s Loughrea story. These are alternatives. Rejoin for dinner, music and optional tango if arranged.

  3. Sunday

Keep it flexible with a food morning, coastal walk or shorter heritage outing. Work backwards from the longer Shannon transfer when choosing your final activity.

These are alternatives to choose from, not a checklist. Flight times, access, weather and availability will shape the final itinerary.

Planning notes updated 13 October 2026. Flight, accommodation and future bus allowances are editorial budgeting assumptions, not live price checks. Today’s published bus examples are listed separately on the fare sources page.

One more day?

There is always another road.

Take an extra day for Inis Mór or the Burren and Cliffs of Moher in neighbouring Clare. Ferry timetables and weather should set the pace, not a race back to the dance floor.
